This book mainly introduces Master Taixu’s “life Buddhism” theory, which is the guiding ideology of modern Chinese Buddhism“ The fundamental purpose of “life Buddhism” is to improve society and human beings with the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism of “sacrifice oneself and benefit others” and “spare benefits and have feelings”, and to establish perfect personality and monk character. The main trend of Buddhism must be close to human life, and guide men and women to be positive, that is, people become Buddhists, and people become Buddhists, so as to encourage monks and believers to start from the reality of life and start from their own moment. 什么是佛学

    “佛教”,平常都以寺庵中之僧尼为代表,以为不过一种礼拜式之宗教,何学之可言!此曰佛学,未免有所未喻,故先将学字解释之。学字常义有二:一、是动词,如学习学作,凡有所摹效练习,均可名学,如小儿学语学行等。二、是名词,如学理学说,凡持之有故,言之成理,前后相应,有精深详密之条理者,如科学哲学等,方可名学。今称佛学,亦指有精密条理之学理而言。向来佛徒有所谓学佛与佛学之二语。学佛者,谓实践修行;而佛学则讲求明确精密之学理。其实学佛与佛学非二,凡学佛必先了解佛学之真理,然后始能贯彻实行。故欲实行学佛,必先究明佛之学理,佛之学理,尤贵实证。如依佛典固可得其理解,然所求之理解,乃是佛智所实证之境,若仅作为一种研究,则实际上仍未能证得。故讲学应期于实证,期实证则须学佛之所行。

  佛教何以有学?通常佛典内多称佛法。有人言佛法即哲学,佛法即宗教。有人言佛法非哲学亦非宗教,只能称佛法。今将佛法分为四种,即教理行果是也。教者,即佛现身于世间所说之法,遗留于后世教化有情者。在当时仅有言说,未留文字,故无书籍。其所说之语言,以音声为体。

太虚大师(1890—1947),法名唯心,字太虚,号昧庵,俗姓吕,乳名淦森,学名沛林,原籍浙江崇德(今浙江桐乡),生于浙江海宁,近代著名高僧。太虚大师是中国近代佛教改革运动中的一位理论家和实践家,被称为“中国佛教之马丁路德”。他把自己的一生都献给了振兴佛教、建设新佛教文化的事业。

Master Taixu (1890-1947), a famous monk in modern times, was born in Haining, Zhejiang Province. His legal name is Weixin, and his word is Taixu. His surname is Maian. His common surname is Lu, his lactating name is gansen, and his scientific name is Peilin. Master Taixu is a theorist and practitioner in the reform movement of modern Chinese Buddhism, known as “Martin Luther of Chinese Buddhism”. He devoted his whole life to the cause of rejuvenating Buddhism and building a new Buddhist culture.
